Yoga classes for beginners

All of the classes we run (with the exception of the guided class on Friday morning) are suitable for complete beginners to Yoga*.

We know that beginners’ classes are popular but we believe strongly that the best way to learn the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is in the setting of a Mysore Style class. The traditional way of teaching this practice is, in our opinion, the best way. If you’re unsure what this means then please read the frequently asked questions on our Mysore Style page.

In your first class we will introduce you to the fundamentals of Yoga, including the postures, breathing (including vinyasa), how to build energy by use of bandhas (internal energy locks) and how to maintain focus through the use of drishti (gazing points).

If this all sounds incomprehensible to you, then you are not alone. It will all become very clear to you once you start to learn the practice.

Ashtanga Yoga consists of a set series of postures which is memorised by the student. You will not be required to keep up with any other students in the class as each student in a Mysore Style class progresses through the practice at his/her own pace. It is, therefore, the most meditative and also the safest way to learn this powerful yoga practice.

Please do come along a try it out for yourself. Don’t be intimidated if you are a beginner. There are no ‘levels’ in any of our classes.

If you are unable to attend our morning Mysore Style classes (or if you have any further questions, no matter how stupid they may seem to you) please contact us here and we will see what we can do to get you started.

  • Mats are available at the studio but it is preferable to bring your own.
  • Please wear light clothes which you can move in easily.
  • The practice is designed to produce a purifying heat so be prepared to sweat (it is a good idea to bring a small towel with you).
  • You will be barefoot on your mat so specific footwear is not needed.
  • Please do not have a big meal before the class.

*Our Friday morning guided class is not suitable for complete beginners, but after a few weeks of practice it would be possible for beginners to attend.
